In the fall of 2023, I taught a workshop to 18 college students about the basics of papermaking through the medium of mushrooms! Before the class, the students went out and collected various mushroom species, the two most prevalent were red-belted polypores and turkey tail mushrooms, so those are the species that we focused on. In the images above, the red-brown paper was created from the red-belted polypore mushrooms and the off-white paper was created from the turkey tails. The turkey tail paper was lovely and thin and ended up being many people’s favorite.
